Making the most to our visit to the cooperative La Fageda, we have decided to spend the day in the area and stroll around, to visit once more the best exponent of volcanic landscape in the whole country. A spectacular scenery of over 15.000 hectares.

The Natural Park of the Volcanic Area of the Garrotxa has 28 routes, and almost all of them are clearly marked. Some of these routes connect in several points with Itinerannia, so that you can relax and enjoy the surroundings without fearing of getting lost.

We have decided to start discovering the area by following the path marked as number 1. It is a circular route, which allows visiting some of the most representative areas of the park in 11 kilometres and about 4 hours.

Following the recommendations of this website, really useful when planning our excursions, we have started our tour from the parking lot next to the Santa Margarida Volcano. This option is really useful, because allows you to enjoy one of the best parts of the park from the beginning and overcome one of the longest and steepest slopes at the beginning, when we still have energy to do that.

This way, we will start from an area with huge chestnuts forming strange shapes, to carry on to the slope that will lead us to the access to the volcano. The route bypasses the inside of the crater, but we recommend you to detour from the path to go down to the crater and take a look at your surroundings. There is nothing like this! Afterwards, you can reincorporate to the path. Make sure you are following the signs that guide route nº1. Try not to take the wrong way or sign, as you will need all your energy to finish the whole tour.garrotxa-santa_margarida-ruta_dels_volcans-catalunya-livecatalunya

Next, we will find the Pla Sacot and the Church of Saint Miquel de Sacot. You will recognize it for the paved road that you will have to walk to reach the church. This is a great place to take a break and recover some energy for the last part of the route.

Following the tour, we will reach what we think is the most impressive and unique landscape of the area: the famous “Fageda d’en Jordà”, a beech wood growing on the lava flow, characterised by numerous scattered lumps and hummocks that in some cases are over 20 m high. Imagine being in a place completely surrounded by nature, where everything around you is green. The greenest and tallest trees, protecting you from the sun and the heat. Amazing!garrotxa-fageda-ruta_dels_volcans-catalunya-livecatalunya

If you have the chance, do not forget to stop by La Fageda to taste one of their fabulous yogurts. “La Fageda” is a non-profit social Catalan cooperative founded in 1982, with the aim of integrate people from the region who suffer from any intellectual disability or mental disorder, using an occupational therapy. The cooperative owns an estate of 15 hectares employing about 270 people. It’s worth a visit to learn more about their magnificent work.

Now we just have to go through the area of Can Serra, after crossing the road using the pedestrian subway and a little bit farther we will find the Croscat, apparently one of the youngest volcanoes and the most exploited.

A little bit more and we are back to the parking. We have finished the 11 kilometres track in great physical condition and ready to go back very soon to discover the rest of the routes.

Before leaving, we have some recommendations for you. The area has different parking areas, toilets and picnic areas. Please, try to respect the nature, by always picking up the rubbish that you make and take it away with you or put it in the rubbish bins in the specific areas. 98% of the territory is private property. Try not to make annoying noises or disturb the people that live there or are visiting. It is not allowed to collect plants, rocks and minerals within the Natural Park.

A highly recommedable experience. You can find us on the main social networks: FacebookTwitter or Google + We will pleased to receive your comments, suggestions, recommendations… if you decide to give it a try.
