We know it’s still only Wednesday and that most of us are still working and not on holidays, but we couldn’t help but publishing some of the best celebrations scheduled all along the Catalan coast for today. Beyond religious beliefs, there are many activities and traditional celebrations planed to commemorate the “sailors festivities”.

This festivity, that has been celebrated each 16th of July since the eighteenth century to ask protection from the dangers of the sea to the “Virgen del Carmen” , has developed into a popular celebration offering plenty of ludic activities suitable for everyone.

If we take a look among the different activities proposed in the fishing villages, we can find from the most traditional proposals, such as processions, “sardanas”, “havaneres” and “rom cremat” … to the most ludic activities including rock concerts, popular activities for children and fireworks.

Find below a list with some of the different options  recommended along the coast. There will surely be plenty of other celebrations, organized by neighbourhood committees, or private associations. We have chosen the following villages and activities.

– Sitges: maritime procession, “havaneres” and “cremat de rom”

– Llançà: mass and maritime procession

– Ampolla: mass, maritime procession and fireworks

– L’Estartit: mass, maritime procession to the Illes Medes, “sardanes” and popular music

– L’Escala: “alfombra de sal” in front of the church, maritime and terrestrial procession, sardanes y dance

– Empuriabrava: procession, “gegants”, “castells”, “havaneres”, sardanas, guided tours …

Some of the villages have already celebrated this festivity this past weekend, and some of them with be celebrating it the next weekend, as Arenys de Mar. Follow our events calendar if you want to know what is going on around Catalunya.

And not fishermen villages are celebrating. In Carme (Anoia) near Igualada, they will be celebrating these days their local Festa Major (16th – 20th July). There are a mass, sardanes and havaneres scheduled for today, but there will be plenty of activities during the whole week.

And, as we always say, you can share your pictures with us. And you want to promote for free any of your local celebrations, you just have to send us an email with all the information and we will publish a post on our blog.
