This weekend you have no excuse to enjoy the wide variety of cultural activities scheduled all over the country.
Museums, monuments and cultural foundations have joined the celebrations organized for the “International Museum Day” on Sunday 18th May, offering different activities for the whole family throughout the weekend. And you can even start with the celebrations right the night before. Most of the main museums in Barcelona and some others in different parts of the country will also open on Saturday night, for the “European Night of Museum” with free entrances and special opening times (from 7 p.m. until 1 a.m.). Concerts, film projections, theatre, unusual tours, and even the chance to enjoy a drink on the outside patio of some museums are only few of the possibilities offered during this special occasion.
Follow this link to the official website of the Culture Department of the Generalitat de Catalunya if you don’t want to miss any of the programmed activities. We suggest, however, to take a look at the museum’s own website to check on times and conditions.
If you are looking to avoid crowded museums and escape cues that will be forming in front of any main museum in Catalunya, we have selected four unusual museums that won’t be as crowded and won’t disappoint you.
Our first recommendation is in Barcelona and is the “Magic Museum” (C/ de les Jonqueres, 15 – Barcelona) that will join the celebrations of the weekend with special opening hours on Saturday (until 1 a.m). There are several workshops scheduled on a regular basis, just in case the visit wows you and you really want to give it a try. As well as the museum, there is a theatre with great magic shows playing on a regular basis. And if you need to buy some of the materials needed to start with you newly found hobby, you will find whatever you are looking for at the store they own also in Barcelona (c/ Princesa, 11).
Our second recommendation is the “Museum of Miniatures and Micro miniatures – Micromundi” in Besalú. This museum will surprise you with the exceptional and tiny recreations of quotidian life and images in such unusual objects as the shell of a pistachio. More than 5.000 works of art from international artists that won’t leave you indifferent.
Yet another recommendation, this time for our wine lovers. It is called the “Museum of Wine Culture in Catalunya” and can be found in Vilafranca del Penedés (Plaça Jaume I, 5). This museum has also joined the activities planned for the weekend, opening its doors to a “White night” on Saturday 17th May, with free entrance and special opening time until 1 a.m. On Sunday you can also enjoy a free entrance to the museum, including its temporary exhibitions. The museum includes a Tavern, lead by the expert sommelier Ton Colet, specialist in Penedés wines; where you can enjoy the best wines of the country, being advised by a huge professional. In the same Royal Palace, where this Vinseum is located, you can also enjoy, a part of the building itself, two other exhibitions: “Cooperative & Modernism” and “What is left from 1714”.
Our last recommendation guide us to Palamós, with a combined visit of the “Fisheries Museum” (Zona Portuária – Palamós), where you can discover the past, present and future of the fishing world in Catalunya, as well as the evolution of the tools and materials used. Once in Palamós, you will be able to enjoy also this weekend the “Palamós – land of Sea” festival. There are activities organized throughout the weekend (from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th) for the whole family to enjoy. You can also discover this season newest activity called “Fishing-tourism”, where you will be able to go on board of some of the fishing boats departing from Palamós to share with professional fishermen their day’s work and experiences.
