If you translate this idiom into English, you will come out with “lots of shit”, which might seem as a the rudest think to wish to anyone. But in Catalunya “molta merda” is a popular expression, commonly used among actors and actresses, to wish someone “good luck” or “success”.

To discover the origin of the Catalan idiom “molta merda” we have to go back to the sixteenth century, when the only means of transport were horses and carriages. People leaving outside the city who wanted to enjoy the show had to move to the city with their horses. A great performance would move a huge audience travelling with their horses, filling the streets with poop. The best way to know that the show had been a success was seeing the streets filled with poop, “lots of shit” In English, people use the expression “break a leg” to wish an actor “good luck“.
